Where the West Shops and What It Means for Refrigerated Freight

A shopper in Southern California might know Ralphs. In Arizona, Fry’s. In the Pacific Northwest, Fred Meyer. Those familiar regional names all belong to the Kroger family.

For a food manufacturer planning Western distribution, understanding those connections is a useful starting point. It helps explain the retail market the product is entering and prompts the next set of questions about how orders will reach their destinations.

That’s why Minuteman Transport created “Where the West Shops,” a graphic featuring 10 leading grocery groups across 11 Western states.

The geography behind the graphic

The map covers California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. Here, “the West” includes the Pacific Coast and the inland Western states.

The featured groups are Costco; Walmart and Sam’s Club; Kroger; Albertsons Companies; Target; Trader Joe’s; Amazon’s Whole Foods Market; Sprouts Farmers Market; WinCo Foods; and Chedraui USA.

How we chose the groups

We considered store presence in the West, overall scale, regional recognition and a mix of grocery formats. That mix includes traditional supermarkets, warehouse clubs, value-oriented stores and natural or premium grocery retailers.

This is a curated market overview, not a ranking by grocery sales, shopper preference or market share. The order of the groups does not represent first through tenth place. Regional labels identify notable areas of presence rather than exclusive territories.

Several other grocers deserve attention in a closer regional view, including Grocery Outlet, Stater Bros., Raley’s and Gelson’s. A California-only graphic would naturally look different from an 11-state overview.

Familiar stores can share a parent company

Kroger’s corporate website connects its family of banners with regional markets: Ralphs in Southern California, Fry’s in Arizona, Fred Meyer and QFC in the Pacific Northwest, and King Soopers in Colorado. Grouping these names together makes the company’s Western presence easier to understand.

Albertsons Companies’ annual report identifies Safeway, Vons, Pavilions and Haggen among its banners. We kept Albertsons and Kroger separate and grouped each company’s regional names within its own family.

Chedraui USA is another useful example. Its portfolio includes Smart & Final, El Super and Fiesta Mart. Smart & Final and El Super are the relevant banners for this Western map; Fiesta Mart’s Texas footprint sits outside the 11-state scope.

Turning market knowledge into a delivery plan

A retail map can help frame a distribution conversation. The shipment plan still needs to be built around the actual order and receiving location.

For refrigerated freight, that means confirming the delivery address, product temperature, shipment size, appointment and handling requirements. A shared parent company should never be treated as proof that every receiving facility follows the same process.

Those details also help determine whether an order calls for refrigerated less-than-truckload service, a dedicated truck, consolidation, cross-docking or storage ahead of delivery. Store counts alone cannot answer those questions.

California roots and practical refrigerated support

Minuteman Transport is based in City of Industry, California, with refrigerated transportation services across California, Arizona and Nevada, alongside cold storage and cross-docking.

The graphic looks at the broader Western grocery market. Our role in a shipping conversation is to understand the specific destinations, product requirements and timing, then work through the services that fit.

If you’re planning refrigerated shipments into California, Arizona or Nevada, tell us where the freight is going, how much you’re moving and when it needs to arrive.

Research note: This overview draws on public company information, annual reports and store directories reviewed in October 2026. Retailer names and logos identify market participants and do not imply endorsement or a customer relationship.
