Refrigerated Partial Truckload (PTL) is a highly efficient transportation option designed for mid-sized shipments that do not require a full trailer but exceed the efficiency of LTL.
Typically ranging from 8 to 18 pallets, PTL shipments are often priced as a full truckload with a negotiated discount. In this model, the shipper agrees to allow the carrier to utilize the remaining trailer space.
Key Benefits of PTL
Lower cost compared to full truckload shipments
Fewer handling points than LTL, improving product integrity
More direct routing and improved transit times
Considerations
Shared trailer space reduces control compared to FTL
Requires flexibility in planning and routing
Dependent on carrier coordination and available capacity
Best Use Cases
PTL is ideal for shipments that are too large for efficient LTL but do not require a dedicated trailer. It provides an optimal balance between cost savings and service performance.
At Minuteman Transport, we help customers identify PTL opportunities and structure shipments for maximum efficiency across California, Arizona, and Nevada.
